 Excerpt

Blaine awoke and tried to clear the haze that had invaded her mind. As she looked around, she was hard pressed to find clarity in the shadowed, almost dreamlike events of the last few days. She stretched and stood up. Though her body felt stiff and sore, she was somewhat rested. She found herself alone in the one room shack. She wondered where her gentle host was. Walking over to the window, she observed Andeous approaching in the distance. Then fear struck Blaine’s very soul as she looked beyond Andeous and saw a group of ogres mounted on large reptilian creatures approaching with great velocity. At their present speed, they would soon arrive at the shack. Blaine’s heart began to pound when she realized they were probably searching for her. A wave of panic washed over her. She moved away from the window and contemplated her next move. The only exit was the front door. Blaine could not bear to think of the consequences to Andeous if the approaching ogres saw her fleeing his home. She tried to take solace in the fact that they may not stop to search the shack. Blaine could feel the ground shake beneath her feet. Her breathing became shallow and labored as she acknowledged the hopelessness of her situation. There was no escape! “Please keep going,” she whispered to herself. Blaine realized the futility of this request as the rumble of the huge reptilian steeds stopped, and the sound of angry grunts echoed in her ears. She moved to the corner of the shack. Crouching there by the edge of the fireplace, she heard the approach of the heavy footsteps. The grunts of the creatures became louder. Blaine held her breath and closed her eyes as she repeated in her mind. Please don’t let them see me. The door flew open with force. Daylight flooded the shack, causing Blaine to close her eyes for a moment against the blinding light. She opened her eyes again, expecting to be nose to nose with an angry ogre. Instead, he was staring right at her without reacting. He took a step closer and glanced around the room. Then to her surprise, he grunted something to his counterparts, turned, and exited the shack. Blaine could see Andeous standing outside. The ogre that had searched the house passed by Andeous, giving him a ruthless shove; all the other ogres laughed as he fell backward with a loud thud.
