It’s Kind of a Cheesy Love Story
by Lauren Morrill
Published by: Farrar Straus and Giroux (BYR)
Publication date: March 9th 2021
Genres: Comedy, Romance, Young Adult
Synopsis:

A delicious love story with all the toppings, Lauren Morrill’s It’s Kind of a Cheesy Love Story is a contemporary YA rom-com about love, friendship, and pizza, perfect for fans of Becky Albertalli and Jenny Han.

After her mother gave birth to her in the bathroom of a local pizzeria, Beck has been given the dubious privilege of having minor fame, free pizza for life, and a guaranteed job when she turns sixteen—a job she unfortunately can’t afford to turn down.

Now she’s stuck with her geeky co-workers instead of taking Instagram-ready shots with her best friends (and her epic crush).

But maybe the pizza people aren’t all bad. Maybe that pizza delivery guy is kind of cute. And maybe there’s a way to make this Bathroom Baby thing work for her. Because when disaster strikes the beloved pizza place that’s started to feel like home, she’s going to need a miracle—one that might even mean bringing her two worlds together.

Now, because this book focuses a lot on cheese and cheesy love stories, I thought I would find out from the author what their favorite cheesy love stories were to give us some more cheesiness to continue on with after finishing this book or to just put you in the perfect mood to read this one!

Did you say 3? Or 30? Because honestly, I could go all day. Rom coms are BY FAR my favorite thing to read, watch, or think about. I don’t know about you, but over the last year, when everything felt dark and scary and uncertain, I turned to my beloved rom com to keep me afloat when things felt bad.

10 Things I Hate About You – I mean … does it get any better than Heath Ledger (rest his beautiful soul!) singing Can’t Take My Eyes Off You from the stands with a marching band accompaniment? No! It does not! If we’re bringing back 90s fashion, I would like Julia Stiles’ entire wardrobe from this movie delivered to my house, please and thank you. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go pop on some Letters to Cleo and dance around my room like I’m 16 again. There is definitely a little bit of Patrick’s DNA in Tristan, the broody pizza delivery boy in It’s Kind of a Cheesy Love Story. Prickly on the outside, warm and gooey on the inside!

Clueless – I don’t mean to blow your mind here, but I’m old enough that I saw Clueless in the theater, and then proceeded to annoy my entire family with adopting the lingo. I was a full-on Monet (but to be fair, I was 13, and weren’t we all that age?). It was the movie that introduced us to Paul Rudd, an actor so handsome, so sweet, so funny, that we could completely overlook the fact that he was her step-brother (which is, let’s be honest, a little bit ick).

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before – I have been thoroughly delighted to see the rom com revolution happening on streaming platforms. I grew up in an era where there was basically always a rom com playing at your local movie theater (some were better than others, and if you ever see me on the street and want to pull me into a conversation, ask me to talk about the epic weirdness that is the Freddie Prinze, Jr and Julie Stiles flick Down to You). I’ve missed having so much cheesy goodness at my fingertips. Thankfully, with Jenny Han at the helm, the good ship rom com has returned with Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky ready to woo us at a moment’s notice. These movies make me wish I could get my girlfriends together, make a pile of sleeping bags, pop and epic amount of popcorn, and marathon the entire trilogy over the course of the night.

And while I have you here, have you watched Ted Lasso? Because I went into that expecting a lighthearted sports comedy, but I was delighted to find it had a secret rom com in the middle of it! Nothing made me happier in 2020 than watching grumpy Roy Kent fall in love. If you loved Leslie and Ben on Parks and Rec, I think you’ll get similar vibes here.
