Then Cecily’s best friend Lila begins to ditch her every time Lila’s boyfriend calls. Cecily feels lost, but she and Andrew begin connecting more and she’s never been in a relationship where she felt so understood. Andrew even begins to confide in her about his anxiety. Soon Cecily experiences her own anxiety on a magazine photo shoot, but she manages to impress the magazine staff. Just when it seems like all her dreams are coming true, everything comes crashing down when a photo of Andrew with another girl appears online. He swears nothing happened, but Cecily is crushed. She feels like she’s lost two of the people closest to her. Was her perfect relationship real or was she in over her head?

Since the book deals with anxiety, I thought I would ask the author if she was willing to share some of her favorite forms of self care that she uses when she feels she needs some self care time! Here is what she enjoys!:

When I was asked to write my favorite forms of self-care my first thought was, “Do I want the world to know how I self-soothed with Pepsi, bacon, and the Disney channel after dealing with grief and the anxiety that goes with it?” And then I thought, well, it got me through, didn’t it? I have Andrew and Cecily both deal with anxiety in both of the books and I have another book called, Landry in Like, where I have a slightly younger character learning some tips to help with her anxiety. They use a few different methods, but here are five that help me.

So my first thing is carefully chosen TV shows and movies. Notice I say carefully chosen and that’s because I accidentally picked some of the WORST things a person could watch during anxiety and grief. Like maybe don’t watch the movie “Wild: because it will leave you in a fetal position rocking back and forth, but I digress. I watched cute shows on the Disney Channel like “Austin and Ally” reruns, the “Teen Beach” movie and anything that didn’t have scenes that would spike my anxiety.

Mint Fields tea. It’s calming and soothing. It also warms you if you get cold when you’re anxious which a lot of people do. Tea was always my mom’s fix-it for everything.

A carefully chosen playlist. Music that triggers any anxious moments is a big no-no, but soothing music can help a lot. Mozart is recommended by a lot of people and I like Lauren Daigle and George Michael. Elvis gospel music is also soothing.

Devotionals and reading the Bible got me through a lot this past year and a half. I recommend going to a bookstore or flipping through sample pages online to find a devotional that feels right to you. I had one recommended to me by a guy working in a bookstore. I shared what I was looking for and he said it was his go-to and it was called, Streams in the Desert. A phone call with someone you can vent to. I know, we all prefer texting and messaging, but there’s something to be said about a phone chat. You might think twice about typing something in a message, but you do find yourself feeling freer to share your thoughts if you don’t have time to second guess them. I find spending time talking on the phone does a lot of good.
